In 2014 Sydney-based artist, Daniel Monks was awarded an Amplify your art grant through Accessible Arts to work with his mentor, Philip Channells across a series of Dance Integrated Australia projects.
The latest project, IT’S ALL ABOUT ME (solo series) brings together Channells and Monks who will use the residency period to develop the first stages of a new (short) solo performance and a dance film made with Monks’ long-time collaborator, Stevie Cruz-Martin.
“My first week of the “IT’S ALL ABOUT ME (solo series)” residency with Philip Channells has been challenging, rewarding & fun. I’ve been stretched & pushed, not only conceptually, but also physically. What I have thought my body is capable of has been expanded & perceived limitations have been tested, which has been liberating & exciting. I’m incredibly excited for what our second week will bring.”
Channells and Monks have been working in the old chapel at the Federal School of Arts discovering new movement vocabulary and exploring potential dramaturgical possibilities inspired by aspects of Daniel’s lived experience of an acquired physical impairment.
