UNRAVEL is a portrait series which captures the uninhibited expressions of young people living with a disability. The dancers featured in these images have worked with creative director Philip Channells on projects in NSW for Accessible Arts & Dance Integrated Australia (Catalyst Dance Masterclass Series) and in SA for Restless Dance Theatre. The photographic component came about after photographer Katie Pashley viewed Necessary Games, an ABC TV documentary on Restless Dance Theatre.
She was inspired to collaborate with Channells, the disability arts organisations, dance companies and the dancers. After meeting the dancers during their residency at Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon trust property near Nowra, a strong bond was established. Together their aim was to capture and promote the individuality, creativity and ultimately the inspiration of these artists by combining performance and visual arts. The results of this are clearly realised in the UNRAVEL portrait series.
UNRAVEL intends to promote the positivity of individuals despite adversity and explores the inner strength and truth of these brilliant young performers. p / i / c / k / u / p, founded in 2011 by Philip Channells and Katie Pashley, was established to bring together exceptional artistic talent. This award-winning duo, comprising the partnership between creative director and photographer is dedicated to the advancement of social justice issues through the arts.
These shoots would not have been possible without the generosity and support of many wonderful individuals and organisations. Special thanks must go to Mondo Studios, Accessible Arts NSW and Restless Dance Theatre.
